Not every day deep lyrics. Sometimes we just wanna shake a leg.
Behind the Lyrics: Lost in the Rhythm
I'm not even going to lie to you guys, I was hella scared to release Lost in the Rhythm. I think I'm one of those people who feels like everything I create needs to have some sort of deeper meaning. And after releasing songs like Former People Pleaser and U Ain't Me, I found myself putting even more pressure on what I wanted to say next.
But sometimes, you just want to have fun. Not every day sad/serious songs, my ex this, my ex that. Like, girlllllllll, please!!!!!
Sometimes you don't want to overthink or overanalyse anything. Sometimes you just want to shake nyash. And that's exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to make music that made me want to get up and dance, without feeling like I had to attach some profound meaning to it.
Trying something different
I'd already found myself listening to more dance music, but my birthday trip to Ibiza took it to another level. I've always loved experimenting with different sounds, and I feel like I've found my own lane somewhere between pop and hip-hop. But I also don't want to feel restricted by that.
With Lost in the Rhythm, I wanted to lean further into my love of pop and dance music and give myself permission to try something different. And that extended beyond the music. I wanted to experiment with the styling, makeup and the whole visual world. If you've followed me for a while, you'll know I love my grunge-glam, alternative aesthetic. But guys, I LOVE pink. My clothes, my bags, my belongings - there's pink everywhere.
And with this release, I got to explore another side of myself.
Bringing the song to life
The song came together after I connected with a producer called Manta, who sent me a selection of beats. As soon as I heard this one, I knew. I was like, "Brooooooo, this is THE ONE." Working with Manta was such a lovely experience. It's rare that I connect with a producer and immediately think, yeah, I can see us working together long-term, but that's exactly how I felt.
This song also gave me the opportunity to do something I'd wanted to do for ages: proper choreography!! (This was actually my third attempt at making that happen. The previous attempts? Listen, I have PTSD. We will never speak of it. )
But third time lucky!
I found an amazing choreographer, Elysia, and some incredibly talented dancers who helped bring the vision to life. When I tell you I was SCARED when Elysia first showed me the choreography. I was thinking there is no way I’m going to learn this- ME?!!! But seeing everything come together, from learning the routine to rehearsals and finally shooting the video, was such a rewarding experience. (When I tell you I reheared everyday and everywhere - I wasn’t playing!)
Learning to slow down
One thing I'm working on is this constant fear that I'm running out of time. Sometimes I worry that if I don't release music quickly enough, people will forget about me. I'd really wanted to release Lost in the Rhythm during the summer, but there were a few obstacles along the way, and things took longer than I'd planned. Instead of accepting that, I put even more pressure on myself to get everything finished.
And the crazy thing is, I'm an independent artist. I'm funding these projects myself. I genuinely cannot afford to be rushing things and making unnecessary mistakes because I'm scared of falling behind. I'm learning that it's okay to take my time. That doing something properly is more important than doing it quickly. And that I don't need to be constantly releasing something to prove that I'm still here.
Learning to let go
I'll be transparent: LITR hasn't performed quite as well as I'd hoped compared to some of my previous releases.
But I'm also learning that not every song is going to connect with people in the same way or at the same speed. Some songs are slow burners. And more importantly, I don't want to let numbers dictate what I'm should/ allowed to create. This song challenged me creatively, pushed me outside my comfort zone and reminded me why I love making music in the first place. There's also a much more personal reason why this release means so much to me.
In a way, releasing LITR was God answering a very specific prayer. I'm just grateful I got to make something fun, try something new and bring another little piece of my imagination to life. And I think that's what this whole experience has taught me.
Not everything needs to have a deeper meaning. Sometimes you're allowed to just enjoy yourself.
If you made it this far thanks so much for sticking around! I hope it’s given you more insight on me and my music.
catch you next time, T x
